Masking vs. Clipping: When to Use Each

What is Clipping:

Clipping is generally applied when the subject of an image has sharp and/or smooth edges for keep them stay straight. Clipping makes the part visible of the image behind any shape and hides everything outside the boundaries of the shape. Clipping involves the laying in to a vector shape like a circle or a triangle on an image or a digital object. By applying clipping path the parts of the element are visible or invisible and clipping uses the geometry of the shape as a result certain visual elements cannot be applied. We can animate all visual elements change their attributes and apply transforms on them as we target the elements which has passed the “clip path” process. Clipping do not allow the pointer events on the parts clipped away; it allows the events only on the parts that we visually see. When we need hide or show something realistically we need to obscure or prominent the moves. To serve this purpose we make clipping path.

When to Use Clipping and Masking:

Clipping and masking both are applied for obscuring the areas where SVG or HTML element can be imposed for visualization purpose. These techniques are essential to show and hide the certain thing of a content which we can apply to unique layouts, for realistic animation.
With a little difference Masking and Clipping offer the similar CSS property but not same. When to use each of them depends on the purpose. Every browser is not compatible for either Clipped or Masked outputs only recently Firefox is the only browser that fully supports all the mask features.

Masking uses an image or a Masked element in SVG where Clipping the uses the SVG path or a CSS shape.
Masking usually modifies the appearance of the element which is it masked with a linear gradient; including bitmap images even those don’t have an alpha channel such as transparency. The method of masking is modifying the pixels of an image, changing values for making them transparent.

Clipping usually cuts the element and this includes the collision surface. In the masked image the collision area also has the masked parts but in a clipped image the collision area is only the visible of an element.
